Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out notes & lyrics
(Jimmy Cox - 1923)
This is such a great song, and has been sung by so many amazing vocalists, that I don’t feel I really do it justice, but the instrumentalists do, so bear with me. I have no idea when I learned this one; it seems I’ve always known it.
LYRICS
Once I led the life of a millionaire
Spent all my money like I didn't care.
Taking my friends out for a mighty good time,
Buying fancy liquor, champagne and wine.
Then I began to fall so low
Didn't have no money, no place to go.
If I ever get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm gonna hang on to it till that eagle grins.
Because nobody knows you when you're down and out.
In your pockets you haven't got a penny,
As for your friends, there ain't too many.
If I ever get back on my feet again,
Everybody wants to be my long lost friend.
It's mighty strange, without a doubt,
Nobody knows you when you're down and out.
I mean, when you're down and out.
