Before the Day Begins notes & lyrics

(Monica Grabin - 2005)
One morning I really did go out to the garden very early and found the bumblebees curled up asleep in the hollyhock blossoms. As I stood there, two hummingbirds came and hovered next to me, one on each side. Magic. The tune is taken from a song of the early 1900's which Charlie Poole recorded, called Baby Rose. It was just too insipid, but the melody stuck in my head, and one day, lying in the hammock, these words came to me.

LYRICS
In the morning when it's early and the pearly light slips in,
I let it guide my feet outside before the day begins....

Bumblebees are sleeping in the hollyhocks,
Catchin' up on a few more zzz's
And the hummingbirds are sippin' from the purple phlox,
And hovering around my knees.
Everything is quiet and still,
The sun's still hiding down behind the hill,
I stand there in my pajamas and my heart is filled...

Before the day (before the day) begins (before the day begins).
There is a time (there is a time) I wish could last a little longer than it does,
Before the day (before the day) begins (before the bumblebees begin to buzz).
My mind is full of dreams and little schemes,
Before the day begins.

Birds begin to twitter in the pine tree tops,
Now the world is waking up,
And the sun starts to shimmer on the bright dew drops,
That fill the buttercups.
Soon the coffee pot will start to perk,
I'll get dressed and I'll go off to work,
But in my heart a little bit of this feeling will lurk...

Before the day (before the day) begins (before the day begins).
There is a time (there is a time) I wish could last a little longer than it does,
Before the day (before the day) begins (before the bumblebees begin to buzz).
My mind is full of dreams and little schemes,
Before the day begins.
