Am I Born to Die notes & lyrics
(traditional Shape-Note Hymn)
This is a rather strange, sad song to end with, but it’s so different from all the others, I didn’t know where else to put it. I found it in a book, and picked out the top melody line on the piano. There are more verses, but the first was, to me, the human condition in a nutshell. Quite a few years ago, my friend Patricia Mulholland and I worked out harmonies, and the ones here are pretty close to what we did. Eventually I realized it could be a 3-part round, although a rather strange one. It’s a meditation.
LYRICS
And am I born to die?
To lay this body down?
And must my trembling spirit fly,
Into a world unknown
